"What is Jewish Henna?” This is the question I am asked frequently as I do Henna at Jewish events all over New York City. My name is Dahlia Raz, and I am a Jewish Henna artist. I come from a mixed Mizrahi, Sephardi and Ashkenazi background and I grew up going back and forth between the US and Israel. My art and I are shaped by the many environments I have called home.

Through this 45 minute lecture, followed by a 15 minute Q&A, I share henna’s journey for the Jewish people. Spanning the course of thousands of years from agricultural practices and poetry in ancient Israel, to modern day wedding celebrations in Tel-Aviv.

I also bring you through my personal story as a Jewish Henna artist. Meeting this special plant for the first time when I was 17, turning it into a business as I road-tripped across the US, and then bringing it to the Jewish communities of New York City.

This ancient plant is a connection to the past, grounding us to the present, and connecting us to the future.

It is my great honor and privilege to share the joy of Jewish Henna with you.
